Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team grabbed one win during a double-header with Marymount (Va.) Tuesday afternoon.
16th-ranked Lynchburg defeated the Saints 9-1 in six innings during Game 2 after losing a five-run lead in the 7th inning of Game 1.
Kailey Dorcsis pitched six innings of scoreless ball as the Hornets racked up five runs over the first five frames of Game 1. Olivia Herman got the scoring started with a homer in the 2nd, Lexi Powell scored Ruby Stewart with a sacrifice fly, and Addison Walter doubled home Herman.
The Saints shocked the Hornets with a five-run comeback in the 7th scoring six runs with six-straight hits and eight total. Alyssa Talayumptewa ripped a double in the bottom of the frame, but the Hornets could not match Marymount's comeback effort and fell 6-5.
Herman, Addison Walter, and Karle Cundiff all had two hits in the loss.
The Hornets turned to Emily Charlton for Game 2, and the junior stepped up to the task. She allowed one run with five hits across six innings and tallied her fourth win of the season.
Lynchburg gave the Chesapeake, Va. native five runs to work with by batting around in the bottom of the 1st. After reaching base with two hits and three walks in Game 1, Walter continued her on-base streak with a single to lead off the inning. Herman continued slugging with an RBI double to bring Lynchburg's shortstop home. Cundiff tallied two RBI on a single, and Stewart scored Cundiff with a base knock the opposite way.
In the 6th, Cundiff drove home Leah Caldwell and Herman. Then Talayumptewa scored on a double-steal to seal the run-rule victory for Lynchburg 9-1.
Cundiff is batting .600 over her seven-game hitting streak.
The Hornets (12-8, 1-1 ODAC) welcomes Guilford to town for two on Saturday, April 1 beginning at 1:30 p.m.
