Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team fell twice to Salisbury in a double-header Wednesday afternoon.
No. 1 Salisbury run-ruled No. 16 Lynchburg 9-1 in the first game and beat the Hornets 9-3 in the second.
Gracie Dooley provided Lynchburg's only run in Game 1. She hit a towering home run to right field in the 5th. Dooley's second homer of the season broke up Salisbury's no-hitter.
Amala Clawson served as Lynchburg's fifth pitcher of the afternoon in the 6th and was in the circle when Salisbury totaled its ninth run of the game. The Hornets went down in order during the bottom of the frame as the Sea Gulls took Game 1 in six innings.
Angela Sperandeo, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Wilson pitcher of the week, started Game 2. She retired the Sea Gulls in the 1st without allowing a hit.
However, Salisbury built a 4-0 lead before Lynchburg's turn at the plate in the 4th. Dooley led off the inning with a hit, and Alyssa Talayumptewa moved Dooley over with a pinch-hit walk. Karle Cundiff scored Dooley with an RBI double.
Salisbury scored four more runs over the next three innings to extend the lead.
The Hornets cut the deficit in the 6th stringing together four hits. Cundiff picked up another base knock, and Kaleigh Hackett and Sarah Watts earned RBI.
Cundiff secured her third hit of the game in the 7th, but Lynchburg could not muster a comeback. Cundiff tallied her first multihit game of the season and fourth of her career in the 9-3 loss.
