Bridgewater, Va. -- Zach Whelan put a header in the net in the 59th minute to lead the 17th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's soccer team to a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win at Bridgewater Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg earned the goal after sustained pressure early in the second half resulted in a throw-in for the Hornets even with the BC box. Brennan Lagana's long throw soared into the box, and Whelan beat the defense to the ball in the air, heading it under the crossbar for the Hornets lead.
Justin Ennis made two saves for the Hornets for Lynchburg's third shutout of the 2022 season.
Lynchburg dominated the stat line across the board, out-shooting the Eagles by a 16-5 margin and earning nine corner kicks to BC's two. The Hornets (10-1-5, 7-1-1 ODAC) will celebrate Senior Day next time out on Shellenberger Field, a 4 p.m. contest Wednesday against Hampden-Sydney.
