Greensboro, N.C. -- The bid for an unbeaten season came to an end Wednesday afternoon for the No. 17-ranked University of Lynchburg men's soccer team, which dropped a 1-0 decision at Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Lynchburg out-shot the Quakers by a 12-4 margin and earned five corner kicks to the Quakers' one, but to no avail. Kenny Nzekwe put GC on top with an 80th-minute goal, and the hosts held off a late Lynchburg barrage to maintain the victory. Luke Mega led the Hornets with four shots.
It was Guilford's first victory over Lynchburg since Oct. 26, 2010 and snapped a 12-match Hornets win streak over the Quakers. Lynchburg rebounded well in that 2010 season, however, winning the ODAC title and running all the way to the NCAA Division III championship match before finishing as the national runner-up.
Lynchburg (9-1-5, 6-1-1 ODAC) will aim to start that rebound Saturday with a trip to Bridgewater for a 3 p.m. match.
