Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 9-ranked Washington and Lee Wednesday evening in a battle of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's remaining unbeaten clubs.
Luke Mega scored the goal for the Hornets, a 62nd-minute fast-break strike that put the home squad ahead for the time being, and Justin Ennis made eight saves in goal for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg withstood a barrage from the Generals in the first half. W&L earned a 10-3 advantage over the defending ODAC champs in the shots department, but Ennis and the Hornet defense kept the Generals off the board. The senior made six saves in the first 45 minutes, and Sebastian Quiroz-Gutierrez stepped in front of a shot during a scramble for a defensive save as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
The Hornets came out with the pressure after halftime. Lynchburg earned the first two scoring chances of the second stanza and had a few others snuffed out by offsides calls before striking quickly in the 62nd minute. Quiroz-Gutierrez received a throw-in and played the ball forward, where Brennan Lagana took a touch that led Mega behind the defense. The senior tracked down the ball near the left post and finished around the keeper to put the Hornets ahead.
W&L regained the momentum in the late going and mounted several attacks, but Lynchburg snuffed them all out until the final 3 minutes. The Generals earned a throw in dangerous territory, and Charley Colby's heave found its way to Patrick Rooney in the box. The tall midfielder headed it goalwards, where Weyimi Agbeyegbe waited near the right post to finish and tie the match with just 2:45 to play.
Neither team earned a shot in the remaining time, cementing the draw. The result ended Lynchburg's five-match losing streak against its conference foe. Three of the last four matches between the two powers on Shellenberger Field have ended even.
Lynchburg (6-0-5, 3-0-1 ODAC) will look to gain more points in the ODAC standings Saturday night with a 7 p.m. match at Ferrum College.
