Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's soccer put an exclamation mark on an exciting weekend of soccer with a 5-1 victory of Pfeiffer on Sunday afternoon.
Luke Mega scored twice, and Brennan Lagana earned two assists on throw-ins. Lynchburg's goalkeeper Justin Ennis made a save on the lone shot that came his way.
Exactly one minute into the match, Kenny Robles set up for Lynchburg's first corner of the day. He found with Zach Whelan for the opening score and the duo's second goal-scoring connection of the season.
Whelan returned the favor in the 8th minute when he used his head to redirect a long throw-in from Lagana. Robles followed suit with a header of his own for the score. Robles already has six points on the season after tallying 16 in 2022.
The Hornets opened the second half similar to the first with another scoring outburst. Once more, Lagana set up a goal on his patented, long throw-in this time finding Benjamin Velasquez before Mega headed it into the back of the net. Velasquez's assist marked his first-collegiate point.
Carter Averette extended the lead seven minutes later with a long shot off the post from outside the box, and Mega scored Lynchburg's final goal after winning a footrace from midfield and beating the keeper. The second-team All-American got into the box score for the first time this year with his eighth-career multigoal performance.
The Hornets (1-0-1) continue their nonconference schedule on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Greensboro at 7 p.m.
