Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse senior Dylan Wolfe scored a career-high seven goals as the Hornets fell in overtime to Salisbury.
Wolfe's career-day was not enough to lift the eighth-ranked Hornets over the sixth-ranked Seagulls. Salisbury's Jude Brown scored the game-winner after picking up a ground ball following a save from senior Tyler Hadley on the first possession of overtime, and Salisbury won 16-15.
Hadley, after making 20 saves against Cabrini on Feb. 25, increased his single-game career-saves record by two and saved 22 shots on the day. He tied CJ Santora for the ninth-most saves in a game in program history. Santora stopped 22 shots against Roanoke in 2017.
Wolfe kick-started the day in the second minute with a goal assisted by freshman Finn Schmidt. He scored once more before the break along with freshman Riley Hastings, and Lynchburg led 3-2 after the first 15 minutes.
Senior Riley Mitchell scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter. He has seven goals and seven assists on the season.
Lynchburg led by four at halftime after Wolfe's fourth goal of the day made it 10-6 with seven seconds to go before intermission.
By the fourth quarter, Lynchburg's lead dwindled to only two. Junior Jake Rust pushed the lead to three as the final quarter started, but the Seagulls responded with three-straight goals and tied the game 13-13 with 5:51 to play.
Wolfe drew contact on a shot just over a minute later, and Salisbury's Simba Makawa went to the box for an unreleasable, one-minute penalty.
Wolfe scored twice on the man-up opportunity, and the Hornets led 15-13 with 3:54 to play. Wolfe put together the 17th seven-goal game in program history.
Junior Michael Kraus won the ensuing faceoff, but Salisbury's Nicholas Ransom made the save on Schmidt's shot. Kraus won 20 faceoffs, good for 58.8% at the dot. Kraus previously won 20 faceoffs against Roanoke on Apr. 16, 2022.
Salisbury scored twice in the final two minutes sending the game to overtime.
The Seagulls won the faceoff and scored to clinch the victory 1:21 into overtime. Hadley made the initial save on Salisbury's first shot of overtime, but Brown scooped up a ground ball after the save redirected in front of the net and buried the game-winning shot with his momentum carrying him away from the net.
Lynchburg suffered its first defeat of the year, but the No. 8 Hornets (3-1) turn their attention to Stevenson on Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
