Lynchburg, Va. --University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse sophomore Carter Besz scored four goals and added an assist in 11th-ranked Lynchburg's 22-1 win over Ferrum Saturday afternoon.
Making his Hornet debut, Besz was one of two players with hat tricks on the day. Freshman Kayden Hinchey recorded three goals as well.
Riley Hastings also impressed in his first game as Hornet. The first-year from Alpharetta, Ga. assisted five times and scored. Hastings assisted on the first goal of the season coming from Dylan Wolfe. He also assisted on Luke Brookman's first-career goal and Lynchburg's first-freshman goal of the 2023 season.
Lynchburg led 7-0 just 5:18 into play. The Hornets did not score again until the second quarter when they hung five more scores on Ferrum. Riley Mitchell netted his first goal of the season in the second after picking up a ground ball following a saved shot and buried it in the back of the net. Mitchell scored the most goals (40) in 2022 for Lynchburg among the returning players.
Ferrum scored its first goal in the third period, but that was overshadowed by 10 more goals from the Hornets in the second half. 15 players recorded a point on the day with 13 goal scorers. The Hornets scored 20 goals in game for the eighth time since the start of last year, are 4-0 all-time against Ferrum, and have outscored the Panthers 93-8 in that time.
The Hornets (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) hit the road for their next matchup and take on St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.
