Lynchburg, Va. -- Sarah Barnes scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute, Georgie Duggan also scored for the Hornets, and the 20th-ranked University of Lynchburg women's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Maryville in the first match of the 2019 Shellenberger Classic.
The Scots (2-1) got on the board first on Taylor Frizen's unassisted goal in the 27th minute, but Lynchburg (2-1) quickly tied the match when Duggan finished a rebound on Madalyn Amos' saved shot in the 28th.
The teams went into halftime tied, but Lynchburg dominated the second half of play. The Hornets finally took the lead when Taylor Stevens found Barnes above the top of the box, and the senior scorched a low-flying shot into the left side of the net.
Lynchburg out-shot MC 17-7 in the match.
The Hornets are back in action Sunday in the classic's third match, set for a 2 p.m. kickoff against Kalamazoo.
