Lynchburg Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with 21-4 Win Over Birmingham Southern
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team scored the first 16 goals of the game and 16 different players found the back of the net Sunday afternoon as the Hornets cruised to a 21-4 non-conference victory over visiting Birmingham Southern College.
Senior Jeff Schwartz won the opening face-off and promptly scored in the first seven seconds of the game and the Hornets never looked back. LC scored seven times in the first period and eight more times in the second to give LC a 15-0 halftime edge. The Panthers scored three times in the third and once in the fourth, as LC scored six second-half tallies.
Senior attack Dylan Hoff had three goals and three assists to lead all scorers. Freshman Jay Goldsmith contributed a goal and three assists and Matt Manzo had two goals and an assist and Pat Ohrem and Todd Galvin also had two goals. Thomas Rodenhouse and Vin Curran and each had a goal and an assist, while Schwartz, Andrew Wilfong, Derek Sweet, Campbell Armstrong, Chase Loetz, David Alyanakian, Max Voumard, Andrew Blundin and Kyle Sullivan each scored once.
Erik Klein scored twice for Birmingham Southern, and Jacob McPherson and Matt Ivie each added a goal. John Sommerall won 15 of his 27 face-offs.
Senior John Lombardo caused four turnovers and LC was 13 for 15 in clear opportunities. Lynchburg outshot the Panthers 36-28.
Lynchburg, ranked #8 in the 2012 Inside Lacrosse pre-season poll, travels to top-ranked Salisbury University Saturday for a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
