Volleyball snags two five-set thrillers in New York

Alfred, N.Y. -- Lynchburg College's volleyball team wrapped up a perfect weekend in the Empire State with a pair of thrilling five-set victories over Alfred University (34-32, 12-25, 25-10, 24-26, 15-12) and Houghton College (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10) on Saturday in the Alfred Tournament. The Hornets won all four matches over the two-day tournament.

Hornets setter Lynn Walsh (Columbia, Md.) doled out 62 assists in the two victories to move into seventh on Lynchburg's career assists leaderboard. The senior's total of 1,815 pushed her past current Hornets softball coach Dawn (Gibson) Simmons and 2012 LC grad Brooke Moughon on the leaderboard.

- The day's start foreshadowed the events that would follow as Lynchburg took the first set in thrilling fashion, 34-32, over Alfred. The teams traded the next four sets as Lynchburg won in five. Mesa Willis (Dabneys, Va.) led the Hornet attack with 13 kills while libero Lauren Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va.) anchored the back row with 28 digs.

- Lynchburg crawled back form a 2-1 deficit in the match with Houghton as Sydney Frink (Chester, Va.) set a new career high with 15 kills. Stanford chipped in 24 digs, and Walsh added 12.



Lynchburg will hit the road again on Friday, Oct. 20, returning to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a match against Eastern Mennonite. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
