Volleyball wins opening pair at Alfred Tournament

Alfred, N.Y. -- After a long trip northward, the Lynchburg College volleyball program battled to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Lycoming and followed it later Friday evening with a dominant performance in a sweep of host Alfred State.

Senior outside Mesa Willis (Dabneys, Va.) led the way with 23 kills on the day, and Lynn Walsh (Columbia, Md.) made 33 assists and served up eight aces.

- Lynchburg took the first set of the first match against Lycoming, 25-21, and the two teams traded the next four. Jalissa Linz (York, Pa.) piled up a career-high 13 kills, and Willis added 12.

- Linz and Amanda Wrightson (Toms River, N.J.) blocked an attack to seal the match in the fifth, following another Wrightson block that gave Lynchburg a two-point advantage.

- In the nightcap against host Alfred State, the Hornets left much less to chance. Willis racked up a team-high 11 kills while LC hit .277 as a team.



The Hornets will stay in the Empire State for another pair of matches across town at Alfred University, where they will take on the Saxons and Houghton College.
