Hornet Women's Lax Defeats Va. Wesleyan 12-8
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on for a 12-8 victory Wednesday night against visiting Virginia Wesleyan College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Hornets dominated the first 23 minutes, notching six scores while keeping the Marlins out of the scoring column. Katherine Francis netted two tallies during the 6-0 run. VWC got on the scoreboard with 6:43 left in the first half and put in three goals before intermission. LC led 8-3 at halftime.
Amari Agee opened the second-half with a pair of goals to bring VWC within three at 8-5, but Kendall Adkin scored for LC on a free-position shot. Nikki Salyers netted back-to-back tallies for the Marlins to cut the advantage to 9-7, but the Hornets rallied for a pair of goals to extend the lead to 11-7. Each team scored once and LC controlled the ball down the stretch with crisp passing to run out the clock.
Francis scored a game-high three goals for LC and added an assist and four draw controls. Sarah Shannon and Adkin each scored twice, while Ryland Scott contributed a goal and two assists. Julie Will had a goal and an assist and Bri Slate, Carley Dobson and Caroline Kilby each had a goal. Brianna LaMarca caused five turnovers and scooped three ground balls and Hailey Bossert made seven stops in net.
Salyers, Carla Williams and Agee each scored twice for Virginia Wesleyan (4-11/3-6 ODAC). Kelly Jacobson caused five turnovers and Madison Carroll made 12 saves.
The Hornets (9-6/6-4 ODAC) travel to the University of Mary Washington for a non-conference matchup Saturday at 1 p.m.
