Big Second Half Gives LC Women 61-55 Win over Roanoke

LYNCHBURG, VA - A big second half allowed the Lynchburg College women's basketball team to overcome a 10-point deficit Tuesday evening as LC defeated Roanoke College 61-55 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.

The Maroons opened the game with several small leads, but LC quickly pushed ahead by six, 20-14, with seven minutes left. The Maroons closed with a 16-2 run behind 10-straight points by Paxton Gwin to enter intermission ahead 30-22.

The Maroons scored right after intermission to go ahead 10, but LC used a 14-0 run, with six points each from sophomore Katie Reeves and freshman Chaney Forbush, to take a 36-32 edge.  Roanoke never regained the lead, but did manage to tie the score at 42 all with 7:43 on the game clock. Lynchburg put the game away with another 14-0 surge, this time fueled by five points apiece from sophomore Shannon Allan and freshman Sarah Coon. Roanoke took advantage of some late free-throw misses by the Hornets to cut the lead to single digits, but LC held on.

Allan scored a team-high 15 points for Lynchburg, and tied for a game-high with nine rebounds. Reeves was the only other Hornet in double figures with 11, and also corralled eight rebounds despite being the second-shortest player (5-5) on either team to see game action. Sophomore forward Lauren Penley had eight points and seven rebounds, while Forbush finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Gwin netted a game-high 19 points for Roanoke (9-13/5-8) and added five rebounds. Kelsey Smith notched 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting and Tatum McKee had seven points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The Hornets (13-8/8-5 ODAC) are back in action Thursday evening against Washington & Lee University at 7 p.m. The program's two seniors will be honored before the opening tip.
