Softball Bounces Back, Takes Doubleheader Against Guilford

Lynchburg 10, Guilford 3

Around the Horn

Lynchburg overtook Guilford late in Game 1 to sneak away with the victory and two big innings offensively gave the Hornets the victory in Game 2 to sweep the Quakers on Wednesday evening

Game 1 Breakdown

- The Quakers gained a one run lead following a sacrifice fly in the top of the 2nd inning

- Courtney Lackey of Guilford had a strong outing until the bottom of the 6th when the Hornets would rally for the victory with three runs

- The rally began with senior Kayla St. John firing a shot down the left field line to score junior Skylar Dickens

- That was followed up by a single through the right side by freshman Sarah Commons which brought in freshman Mackenzie Mount

- The comeback was capped off after a wild pitch with the bases loaded advanced the runners including junior Leslie Burgeois who slid into home safely, scoring the go ahead and game-winning run

Game 2 Breakdown

- The Hornets struck first, exploding for four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning

- Senior Logan Walker brought home Dickens on a fielder's choice for the first run of the game

- Commons and Smith both singled to left center, bringing in a combined three runs to finish off a productive half inning

- The Quakers would get a run across in the 3rd and 4th innings to cut the lead to two

- St. John blasted a home run over the left field fence to add another run in the bottom of the 4th, extending the Hornet lead to three

- Guilford would get a run in the top of the 5th thanks to a home run

- Lynchburg put the game well out of reach with a six run 6th inning

- Sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood tacked on a run, smashing a ball that cleared the center field fence in a hurry

- Commons would add her second RBI with a single to left field, bringing in freshman Sarah Ridgeway

- Smith brought in her third and fourth RBIs with a double down the left field line, advancing to third on the throw in

- Dickens helped the cause with a single to left field which brought home Smith, putting the Hornets comfortably ahead, 10-3

On Deck

The Hornets continue conference play as they head to Roanoke for a doubleheader this Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at the James I. Moyer Complex, the host venue for the ODAC Tournament in April.
