Around the Horn

The Hornets and Bears endured chilly conditions in Salisbury as temperatures never broke 40 and the wind whipped across Salisbury Softball Field. Lynchburg built off of a seven-run 2nd inning to mercy rule Ursinus in Game 1 while stout pitching helped the Hornets earn the victory in Game 2. 

Game 1 Breakdown

- Junior Conner English held the Bears to only one run while striking out five in 4.0 innings of solid work, moving to 3-2 on the season

- The Hornets scored seven in the top of the 2nd

- The first ran crossed home after freshman Sarah Commons scored on a bad throw by the first baseman in top of the 2nd

- Senior Jessica Murphy down the left field line to score senior Kayla St. John which was followed up with a double by freshman Kayla Hugate which brought home Murphy and Commons

- Sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood followed in suite, smacking a double to left center to bring across Hugate

- Sophomore Taylor Mabry crushed a 2-run home run to finish the Hornets scoring frenzy

- Commons and Hugate registered RBIs in the top of the third while senior Lauren Smith scored on a fielding error by the shortstop

- The Bears would get one run across in the bottom of the 3rd but the Hornets responded in the next half inning as freshman Kelsey Kinnamon singled in senior Logan Walker 

Game 2 Breakdown

- Freshman Stephanie Hogan threw her second straight complete game in as many starts on Sunday, allowing only two runs while sitting down five batters on strikes

- Lynchburg opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd after the Ursinus second baseman dropped a fly ball, allowing Commons and sophomore Brittany Coffey to score

- The Bears got two across in the top of the 3rd to tie up the score at two

- Coffey singled up the middle in the bottom half of the 3rd to score Chitwood and give the Hornets the lead, 3-2

- Smith doubled to right center in the bottom of the 6th to score St. John while Hugate drove in Smith on a triple and scored herself on a throwing error by the shortstop

On Deck

The Hornets will finish off their stay in Salisbury, Md. with another double header this time with the host of this weekend's tournament, Salisbury University. The Hornets and Seagulls will play two games, with the first set to get underway at 12:00 p.m. on SU Softball Field.
