Two Second Half Headers Give Randolph 2-1 Win over LC in ODAC Title Game

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's soccer team scored two second-half goals off corner kicks to rally for a 2-1 victory Saturday over Lynchburg College in the Championship Game of the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament.

The Hornets earned a penalty kick midway through the first half after Randolph was whistled for a foul in the box on Hornet senior forward Ryan Renfro. Senior midfielder Zach Rusk capitalized by netting the ensuing penalty kick at 23:34, his first tally of the season. The LC defense held the one-goal lead until less than 23 minutes remained in the game.

The WildCats tied the score off a corner kick at 67:09, as Nick Cornell's cross found John Adams' head and into the net. Randolph scored its second goal in similar fashion, as Will Wolf headed in Cornell's pass on another corner kick at 82:05.

Randolph led in both the shot (16-10) and the corner kick categories (6-3). LC keeper Michael Releford made two saves and his counterpart Carter Smith made four stops.

The Hornets season ends with a 7-9-4 mark, but LC finished the season strong, upsetting Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite Universities to reach their third-straight title game, winning in 2009 and 2010. Releford, Renfro and Charles Ashton were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
