Hornets Take Down Marlins 18-8 in Final Regular-Season Game
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Austin Stewart scored five goals to help the #10 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team an 18-8 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Saturday night. It was the last regular-season game for both teams before the start of the conference tournament.
LC controlled the game out of the gate, dominating the first quarter except the last 18 seconds. The Hornets outshot the Marlins 15-3 in the period, and connected on five of them, including a hat trick by Stewart. Campbell Armstrong opened up the scoring at 12:43 off a pass from Aaron Murphy, and Chris Hower notched the other goal in the first. Josh Currier tallied the first goal of the game for VWC with just 18 seconds left in the period.
In the second, Lynchburg continued the early onslaught, scoring four goals by time the clock hit 9:57. Todd Galvin, who assisted on two of Stewart's earlier scores, fired his first of the game in the back of the net on the first Hornet possession. Armstrong tallied his second soon after, and Stewart made it four on the day shortly after off a pass from Thomas Rodenhouse. Rodenhouse then made it 9-1 in favor of Lynchburg. Virginia Wesleyan came alive after that, with Nick Pappas scoring at 9:22 off a pass from Currier, while the Marlins were on the man-advantage. At 7:54, it went the opposite direction, with Currier getting his second. David Alyanakian answered back at 5:20, and it would be the final tally of the half, as LC went into the half with a 10-3 lead.
LC opened things up very quickly after the intermission. Troy Foreit won the faceoff, sprinted down the field and hit Murphy who scored at 14:55. Neither team could get anything else going in the period, until Joe Papetti scored off a pass from Tim Gunn, once again while the Marlins were man-up, at 9:09. Pappas soon after notched his second, during a delayed penalty call, to cut the lead to six. Lynchburg then went on a run, with Stewart making a great pass to Chris Cornelius while he was on the edge of the crease and had an easy goal. Stewart then made it number five on the ensuing possession. Galvin pushed the advantage to nine, but was extended to 10 by Murphy soon at 1:32.
In the fourth, the teams went back and forth in scoring, with the Marlins answering each time the Hornets scored. Dane Angell opened up the quarter but Currier negated that tally. Berk Ellis and Foreit added the last two of the night for Lynchburg, with Currier and John Roth finishing the scoring for VWC.
Rory Finnegan and Ryan Sullivan combined to make 15 saves for Virginia Wesleyan (9-6 overall, 4-5 ODAC). It was caused by the Hornets outshooting the Marlins 56-26. LC also held a huge advantage in ground balls, picking up 49 against 32. Foreit had a game-high and career-high 11 faceoff wins.
Tonight's win forced a three-way tie at the top of the standings with Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. Lynchburg (13-4, 8-1) will enter ODAC tournament play as the #3 seed due to tiebreakers, and host #6 VWC on Tuesday night at a time to be determined.
