Lynchburg Hornets Athletics Identity

University of Lynchburg’s intercollegiate athletics programs are the Lynchburg Hornets. On first reference in print or online, “University of Lynchburg” is preferred. “Lynchburg” and “the Hornets” are acceptable on subsequent references.

‘Burg: An abbreviated version of Lynchburg generally avoided in publications but widely used in cheers. Acceptable on social media where space may be limited. Also acceptable in broadcasts as an alternate reference.

UL and U of L: Shorthand monikers are not used in print materials or in broadcasts.

Lynchburg College and LC: Acceptable in historical references to Lynchburg athletics. University of Lynchburg was known as Lynchburg College from 1919 to July 1, 2018.

Lady Hornets: The term “Lady Hornets” is not a recognized nickname and is not an acceptable term reference toward any Lynchburg Hornets team.

Affiliations: University of Lynchburg athletics programs compete in NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, a Forest, Va.-based league comprised of 15 full members and two sport-specific associate members. Lynchburg’s equestrian program competes in both the National Collegiate Equestrian Association and Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association, as well as the ODAC championships.
