LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Director of Athletics Jon Waters announced on Thursday that Director of Digital Media Initiatives, Joe Hutzler, has been promoted to full-time, effective immediately.
"We are blessed to have such a talented person like Joe helping us tell the amazing stories of Lynchburg in so many different ways over the last two years" said Waters " His tireless work ethic and commitment to our students has helped build new communication platforms that will allow us to connect with supporters and prospects world wide for years to come"
Joe has been responsible for directing, managing, and coordinating all digital media initiatives for the Athletic Department including but not limited to live streaming (LHSN), social media, photography, development of content, digital partnerships, and integrated support of the institutions academic goals and programs.
"I have to thank Dr Garren, Dean Selden and Athletic Director Jon Waters and the entire athletic department for allowing me to step into their world since day 1. A big shout out to the loyal fans of Hornet Nation! The feedback from parents, alumni, faculty and staff have kept that motivating drive to succeed alive and never wavering. Most importantly I have to thank the students that make LHSN what it really is, the best student-run broadcast network in Division III. Without their openness to express themselves and their hard work for a common goal, the "progressively improving" motto is just a cool hashtag on social media."
LHSN boasted 180 live video and audio broadcasts in 2016-2017 including NCAA 2nd Round action for Men's Soccer and Women's Basketball, plus Men's Lacrosse's Elite 8 matchup at Denison University in Ohio.
The newest addition to the LHSN lineup came in the form of the hit show, The Daily Buzz, which has totaled 132 episodes and amassed over 28,000 views to date. The show features highlights, exclusive interviews, campus events and the informative, yet unpredictable "National Day on the Calendar."
Through live streaming, studio shows and social media, the LHSN crew has established programming that reached over 35,000 connections and impressions in 2016-2017. That is an improvement of 11,000 from 2015-2016.
Before arriving in the Hill City two years ago, Hutzler graduated from High Point University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications-Electronic Media. He was a member of the original Sports Link group that still streams all home games live, learned how to operate all equipment behind the camera, but found his calling on the mic, most notably as the Voice of Men's Lacrosse in it's inaugural season as a Division I program (2013).
After graduating, Hutzler worked as a Sports Anchor in Hagerstown, MD (HMTV6) and worked as a commentator for a radio station in Martinsburg, WV (1340AM WEPM). He established the Applemen Radio Network which was a student-run online radio streaming network that featured live games, interviews, and schedules on it's website. The network followed all teams at his alma mater high school, Musselman High School in Inwood, WV.
"It's my responsibility to make sure the rest of the world knows how special these people are and this institution is. I couldn't be more thrilled to know I will maintain that position but have the ability to exceed anything else we have done before. As is custom for me when the Hornets win, "The Hive Has Spoken, and We Are Won Nation"."
